About CBD

Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of over a hundred natural chemical compounds found in the flower of the Cannabis Sativa plant. Cannabis Sativa has been used for thousands of years and has been anecdotally touted over the centuries as a safe, non-addictive substance with a multitude of medicinal benefits. CBD is closely related to another important medicinally active phytocannabinoid: tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the compound that causes the high that cannabis is famous for.

Unlike THC, CBD does not make a person feel “stoned” or intoxicated. That’s because CBD and THC act in different ways on different receptors in the brain and body. Also unlike the THC found in cannabis, CBD manufactured from the hemp plant which contains less than 0.3% of THC, is Federally legal and readily available in the United States.

Legal and available do not necessarily mean safe however. Do to a lack of federal mandates regulating the manufacturing and sale of CBD products, many unsuspecting consumers do not get what they pay for when they buy CBD nowadays. In fact, also according to the Mayo Clinic, another cause for concern is the unreliability of the purity and dosage of CBD in products today. A recent study of 84 CBD products bought online showed that more than 25% of the products contained less CBD than labeled. In addition, THC was found in 18 of those same products.
