What is Delta-8?

Like CBD, Delta-8 (Delta-8 tetrahydrocannabinol) is one of more than 100 chemical compounds found in the cannabis sativa plant. Most people are familiar with THC (Delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol), the main psychoactive compound in cannabis that is responsible for the euphoric high that cannabis is famous for. According to the National Cancer Institute (NCI), one big difference between Delta-8 and Delta-9 THC, is that Delta-8, while still somewhat psychoactive, will produce a less intense and milder “high” than Delta-9 THC will. Because of this, many people refer to Delta-8 as “cannabis lite”.

Is Delta-8 legal?

Most Delta-8 is derived from the hemp plant. Per the 2018 Farm Bill, hemp cultivation and hemp-derived products are legal under federal law because they contain no more than .3% THC. This includes Delta-8 products that also fall within these parameters. Although Delta-8 THC is legal on the federal level, many states have their own laws which specifically regulate Delta-8, and it is currently not legal in 14 states: Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Delaware, Idaho, Iowa, Montana, New York, Nevada, North Dakota, Rhode Island, Vermont, Utah, and Washington. Because of its close chemical relationship with CBD and THC, studies suggest Delta-8 may assist with many of the same ailments as those compounds, such as anxiety, chronic pain, stress and depression. Per the NCI, Delta-8 has anti-anxiety, anti-nausea, and pain-relieving properties. Proponents often say it provides the same kind of medical benefits as “classic” Delta-9 THC without negative side effects such as paranoia.
